Addendum for High Consequence Disease (HCID) launched today
25 Aug 2025
The HCID addendum containing the UK unified HCID assessment PPE ensemble has now been launched.
The purpose of a single HCID PPE ensemble is to support national standardisation of PPE protocols and supporting education to help minimise errors and reduce risk associated with exposure to HCIDs.
The addendum includes information on the classification of HCIDs, procurement and storage of PPE components, safe donning and doffing practices and education and training.
NHSScotland boards are asked to transition to the new Unified HCID assessment PPE ensemble by 25 August 2026. Existing PPE and education resources contained within the NIPCM (Viral Haemorrhagic Fever and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus) will remain available for use until the transition is complete.
Supporting documents have been published alongside the HCID Addendum, these include the Literature Review, the Considered Judgement Forms and Summary of Recommendations and Good Practice Points.
