Appendix 16 - Selection of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by health and care workers (HCWs) during the provision of care

The following table outlines the recommended PPE required to minimise the risk of cross-transmission of infection to self and others when providing care.

Clinical decisions made by staff regarding use/non-use of PPE will depend on a risk assessment which should include for example the presenting symptoms, risk of acquisition and the availability of treatment.

The table can be used in conjunction with Appendix 11 and the A-Z of pathogens for pathogen specific guidance and supporting materials.
